Support Peter Verbiscar-Brown’s 100 mile Wine Country Century charity bike ride

At 78 years of age, Global Partners Co-founder, current Board member, and proud grandfather Peter Verbiscar-Brown is still bicycling to end global poverty – and you are invited to join in!

On May 3, Peter will ride 100 miles in the Wine Country Century in Sonoma County to raise funds for Global Partners. This will be Peter’s 48th consecutive year raising funds by running a marathon or bicycling a century. In the past 16 annual rides, friends and supporters have donated $279,512, which has fueled life-changing projects for tens of thousands of people in East Africa.

This year, Global Partners is doubling down on partnering with impoverished communities to enable people to climb their way out of poverty, and we’re finding new and exciting opportunities to do it.

Update on Last Year’s Donations

Last year’s fundraising helped community-led partners in Uganda, Burundi, and Malawi improve livelihoods for more than 200 households and over 1,000 people in rural East Africa.

Your support funded women’s micro-businesses in Uganda and Burundi. Thriving micro-businesses lead to higher incomes. Families that earn more money can afford to send their kids to school, buy more nutritious food, and have a social safety net. You also helped support solar energy projects in Malawi. Families that now have solar lamps have lower energy costs and higher savings, improved respiratory health, and are empowering better study conditions for children after the sun goes down.

What this year’s gift supports

This year, your gift will help strengthen maternal healthcare and expand girls’ access to education in remote indigenous pastoralist communities in northern Tanzania. Through our local partner, the Pastoral Women’s Council, we’re supporting practical improvements in Ngorongoro District that remove some of the biggest barriers women and girls face: long distances to safe maternal care and a lack of secure boarding space that allows girls to stay in school.

At Ormanie Dispensary, your support will help provide additional hospital beds and a laptop for patient records so the clinic can better meet growing demand for care during labor, delivery, and recovery. This is an important next step for a health facility that already serves about 2,000 people in a remote area where women once had to travel long distances for basic care.

Your gift will also help expand safe boarding at Emanyata Secondary School by providing double-decker beds and mattresses for 60 additional girls. In this region, girls are especially vulnerable to early marriage, FGM, and dropping out of school when distance and safety make attendance difficult. Safe boarding gives girls a better chance to remain in school, continue their education, and build a stronger future.

Your gift will also go to help some of the 1 in 5 African people who still suffer from malnutrition. Confoundingly, most of the world’s malnourished are also farmers. The problem is that most rural farmers lack access to the basic tools and knowledge needed to achieve higher crop yields. Global Partners is working to change this. AGROW is our local partner in Uganda that is delivering high-yield, drought-resistant seeds, environmentally responsible fertilizer, and training lessons to farmers needing access. The result? Farmers will grow more food, feed their communities, and climb out of poverty.
